Former BRM Racing Engineer Dave Lampitt joined SpecFab in 1974, working as a mechanic and engineer for Tom Walkinshaw, who at that time was driving a Gp 2 Ford Escort in the British Touring Car Championship using SpecFab components.

When Company Principal Tivvy Shenton decided to emigrate to the USA in 1977 Lampitt took over the operation and his first task was running Andy Rouse in the BTCC at the wheel of a three litre Capri. Over the next few years SpecFab developed an unmatched reputation for specialised fabrication work, in particular the development of rollcages.

In 1984 SpecFab prepared Brooklyn Garages Ford Escort RS 1600 and claimed second place in class in the British Touring Car Championship- The following year the car won the class and took second place overall in the Championship.

SpecFab were then commissioned by Toyota Great Britain to develop the Toyota Corolla for the British Touring Car Championship and the Team took the overall championship title in 1986 and 1987.

The Company worked on the chassis development of Toyota's Supra Turbo touring car in 1988 whilst also developing the TVR Tuscan challenge race cars in 1989 and 1990. The SpecFab TVRs achieved a championship 1-2 in 1990.

In 1991 SpecFab won the Rover GTi Championship in its inaugural year and the Thunder Saloon Championship, and took second and third overall in the TVR Tuscan Championship.

In 1993 SpecFab prepared nine Ford Mondeo bodyshells for the Andy Rouse run Ford works touring car programme, and in 1995 SpecFab engineered the Team Dynamics Ford Mondeo to win the British Touring Car Championship Privateers Cup.

Also in 1993 SpecFab were commissioned by Ed Arnold Racing/BMW North America to prepare, build and engineer two BMW M5 cars for the 1993 and 1994 Bridgestone Super Car Championship. The cars won the Championship in 1994 and 1995.

At the same time SpecFab were developing in conjunction with Harrier Cars the Harrier LR9 GT car which ran for the second half of the 1995 British GT Championship achieving overall race wins against much more established machinery. In 1996 the Harrier GTi car beat the McLaren Fl at. the mid season meeting at Brands Hatch Circuit.
